Dr Michael Grahn,Senior Lecturer, Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science.

On completion of his PhD on the control of fat storage in adipocytes, Mike worked at Chelsea College and, Later Kings College London on the control of phosphate re-uptake in the kidney and the bioenergetics of electron transfer in cytochrome C oxidase. In 1987 he joined the Academic Surgical Unit at the London Hospital Medical College to set up a group to develop porphyrin-based photosensitisers for the treatment of colorectal cancer. Two of the sensitisers introduced by the group were taken forward to clinical trials and one, temoporfin, was taken through to licensing and is in clinical use.

The experience gained during this work led to an increased interest in the challenges presented by the development and implementation of complex medical technologies. This has led to a particular interest in translational research drawing on advances in both materials and biological sciences to develop novel techniques and technologies to improve treatment and clinical outcomes in colo-rectal disorders. Mike is a member of the UK Health Technologies Knowledge Transfer Network and acts as a consultant to the European Commission and the UK Technology Strategy Board.
